A New Year

A new year encourages us to reflect on the choices we’ve made and think about new opportunities we may have. Traditionally, people make new year’s resolutions, in which a person makes a promise to do an act of self-improvement or something slightly nice. Popular resolutions include:

  • Improve physical well-being: eat healthy food, lose weight, exercise more, eat better, drink less alcohol, quit smoking, stop biting nails, get rid of old bad habits
  • Improve mental well-being; think positive, laugh more often, enjoy life
  • Improve finances: get out of debt, save money, make small investments
  • Improve career: perform better at current job, get a better job, establish own business
  • Improve education: improve grades, get a better education, learn something new (such as a foreign language or music), study often, read more books, improve talents
  • Improve self: become more organized, reduce stress, be less grumpy, manage time, be more independent, perhaps watch less television, play fewer sitting-down video games

In 2007 a study showed that 88% of those who set New Year resolutions fail. I love the fact that although most people don’t achieve their resolutions, people never stop trying to improve upon themselves.

This year I have decided to make a few resolutions, but instead of trying to accomplish everything all at once, I’m going to space them out across the year.

January: Limit TV watching to 1 hour per day (I know, this is pathetic but I spend way too much time watching TV).
February: Bring my lunch to work 4 times a week (healthier and cheaper!)
March: Clean up my Pinterest boards and do at least one project off my list
April: Do a 30 day fitness challenge with Abby and my mom
May: Plan and take a vacation with Abby
June: Convince my mom to let me redecorate a room in her house
July: Run 1 mile every day
August: Start making our Christmas cards!

*I know, I only have the first 7 months… I have a feeling I will need to re-evaluate my goals/accomplishments after that point. 

Visit at least one Robin Hood funded program each month
Send one friend per month a “just because” present
Try one new restaurant each month
